On The Boards

Crozet, VA

This two-story garden center and nursery draws its form from the historic apple sheds and corner stores that define Crozet's agricultural character. A gabled volume in board and batten siding sits above a ground floor wrapped in sliding wood barn doors, opening the retail space directly onto a covered porch and the outdoor plant displays beyond. Vertical wood slats screen a portion of the upper floor, breaking up the massing and nodding to the slatted ventilation found on traditional farm buildings. Inside, a double-height space connects the ground floor retail and storage area to a second-floor office level via an open stair and a wood-clad bridge, with skylights washing the space in natural light. A glazed greenhouse extends off the building's rear, its angled glass roof and structure built for plant display and growing space, stepping down with the site's natural grade. Materials and storage stay visible and working throughout, from terra cotta pots to dry goods racks, keeping the building's nursery function part of its architectural identity.
