Backyard Basecamp
Status:
Phase I 2023, Phase II On the Boards
Baltimore, MD
For over 10 years, Backyard Base Camp has served their immediate Baltimore neighborhood with organic produce from their urban farm, environmental education, and community programming. During Phase I, a 93-year-old farmhouse was renovated into the non-profit headquarters and office. As Backyard Base Camp matured as an organization and expanded to provide summer camps, outdoor preschool, and educational partnerships with local public schools, the organization needed expanded space for additional programming. This project creates a 1600 SF community space for educational programming and workshops. Sited to capture sunlight for PV panels, the wood-frame building features exposed wood trusses, northeast-facing clerestories for soft, year-round natural light, and acoustic baffles that create a playful sense of movement in the space. The original farmhouse and workshop/classroom addition are architecturally connected through the use of wood-slats to screen an exterior stair on the farmhouse and cladding and trellis canopy on the addition. Biophilic design informed the organic forms of the acoustic blades and use of wood for structure, shading, and cladding.
