A top manufacturer in the medical device industry based in Charlottesville, VA purchased a former 72,670 square foot post office to house their manufacturing facility and offices. Having outgrown the space, they aimed to expand their facility in order to accommodate the entire company in one location. The proposed addition seeks to elevate the facility from the long, unarticulated warehouse with minimal glazing into a place where people will be excited to come to work. The new structure prioritizes a simple material palette, and maximization of daylight, while addressing both streets with entry points on all three sides marked by material changes and c-channel canopies. The main entrance is clearly marked with signage and a larger, projecting canopy that creates an identifiable hierarchy from the side entrances.
