The Urban Oasis non-profit organization’s fundamental belief is simple: everyone deserves access to a vibrant community and to fresh, organic food. This project was designed in response to that vision and mission to create an inviting public space that encourages social engagement, supports local economics, and fosters a healthier living environment. Inspired by the biblical verse, “Behold the fowls of the air… yet your heavenly Father feedeth
them. Are you not much better than they?” the façade will feature a mural of sparrows and lilies
painted by local artists, beautifying the street and reflecting a message of
care, provision, and hope. The renovation of a salvaged and neglected rowhouse transforms the interior to accommodate a community cafe, flexible space for workshops and classes, and intimate mezzanine dining with an overhead view of the cafe. A vertical atrium fluidly connects the levels spatially and with natural light. A community room and maker space on the third floor creates additional spaces for residents. Sustainable strategies include a rooftop greenhouse for locally produced food, solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and locally sourced materials.
