Village School
Status:
On The Boards
Charlottesville, VA
The project adds a two-story wing to the rear of Village School's existing brick building, designed to hold its own against the original structure while remaining clearly new. The addition is clad in warm wood siding and black-framed glazing, set against smooth stucco panels, with a shed roof cantilevering out over exposed wood rafter tails. Full-height glass wraps the classroom levels, opening the interior to views of the adjacent sports court and connecting to a lower gathering space with an open timber ceiling structure. A tiered concrete stair steps down from the addition's entry to grade, doubling as informal seating and tying the building to the schoolyard below. The material palette shifts from brick to wood as the addition steps back from the street, marking the new construction as a distinct but complementary counterpart to the historic building it extends.
